Commercial Rent Abatement Submission

The following is another message from the executive director of TABIA, John Kiru

Good evening folks a couple of items to share this evening before the Easter Break that need immediate action. It is our understanding that Parliament will reconvene for a single day session on Tuesday to approve a number of measures including those that are close to our members. Timing is everything, just saying

Please find attached correspondence sent to the Prime Minister and all Members of Parliament today regarding a Commercial Rent Abatement strategy in a format that they and staff recognize. While we and many other organizations have all identified Commercial Rents as our members most critical issue at this point there has not been to my knowledge a proposed solution to dealing with the problem in an equitable way where tenant, landlord and the government collectively share in the solution. To that end we have developed a position that may satisfy all and submit same for their consideration. Please feel free to share with your immediate members and please reach out to your local MP in support of this submission. Further it would be most helpful if you have a relationship with your MPPs  ask them to reach out to their federal counterparts to reinforce the need for a resolution. I have also shared this package with the city, specifically with the mayor and asked that he too add his voice to reinforce this message with urgency during his calls with the folks in Ottawa.  After all May 1st, is around the corner.

The attachments include the foundational letter and rationale for a Commercial Rent Abatement policy, a spread sheet of projections and impacts and a list of responses around the same issue from other countries.

Secondly, as noted in the opening paragraph it is my understanding that the government will reconvene for a single day session on Tuesday to bring into law a number of the policies they announced almost two weeks ago that will have a direct impact on our members. Things such as subsidies and zero percent loans will be finalized so if there are issues that need to be addressed such as minimum payroll of $50K, this would be the time to reach out to any one you or your businesses may know that could have an impact. We will continue to draw attention to these issues but we need your help in making sure that the message is heard.

 Cheers,

Stay safe and enjoy your extended weekend.
